No material is perfect for everyone. Here is a comparison on the five points that most often decide the choice.
1. Cost
Wood needs expensive finishing. Aluminium tends to fit a budget. UPVC needs no finishing and its budget can be tailored.
2. Upkeep
Wood needs intensive maintenance. Aluminium needs attention at the joints. UPVC corners are welded, so joints need no upkeep.
3. Sound insulation
Wood is not soundproof; aluminium is moderately so. UPVC uses rubber seals on frame and sash — the same principle as a car door — for better insulation.
4. Weather and heat
All three materials move with temperature; UPVC moves the most, which is why it is steel-reinforced and installed with a small gap. Aluminium conducts heat very quickly and UPVC very slowly, but most of the heat still enters through the glass.
5. Corrosion and termites
Wood can rot when damp and termites can eat it. Aluminium resists rust through a thin oxide layer, though salty air weakens that protection. UPVC does not rust or rot and does not absorb water.
Aluminium remains a reasonable choice when the budget is very tight. If you value calm, low upkeep and a long-lasting neat look, UPVC is worth considering.
